Press Release
2nd anniversary of Julian Assange’s arrest
Rally in Brussels on 11 April

Comité Free Assange Belgium

Translated by  Eve Harguindey

On Sunday 11 April 2021, two years will have passed since the brutal arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange by British police at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

On the same day, he was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for violating his parole in 2012 and incarcerated in solitary confinement at Belmarsh maximum security prison near London.

This was followed by a request for his extradition from the US and a threat of 175 years in prison if he is extradited.

On 4 January this year, Judge Baraitser, while recognising all the grounds for the prosecution’s requests, refused his extradition on the grounds of health and the risk that he would not be able to withstand prison conditions in the US. The US prosecutors have announced their intention to appeal against this decision, but she decided to refuse Julian Assange’s request for parole.

He therefore remains incarcerated, in total isolation, in the maximum security prison of Belmarsh, without any charge, awaiting only the decisions concerning the appeal procedures.

Two years after 11 April 2019, Julian Assange is still, according to the UN, in arbitrary detention.

Two years after 11 April 2019, we are still here, refusing his extradition and demanding his release and the dropping of charges against him.

This Sunday 11 April 2021, we will be at the Théâtre National, Bd Emile Jacqmain 111-115, 1000 Brussels, from 10am to 6pm alongside Ali Aarrass who will be on hunger strike in support of Julian Assange.

Ali Aarrass, innocent like Julian Assange, was imprisoned in Spain for 2 years. Then, although cleared by the Spanish justice, he was handed over to the Moroccan justice. After a "confession" was extracted from him under torture, he was kept in detention in Morocco for another 10 years.

Around him, throughout the day, the floor will be given to defenders of press freedom and the right to information, human rights defenders, artists, journalists and politicians. Words of support, words of resistance and hope.
