Joydeep Gupta is an Indian journalist who has been writing on environmental issues since covering the Bhopal disaster in 1984. For his contributions to environmental journalism, he won the 2012 Green Globe Award at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit. An adjunct faculty at the Jindal School of Journalism And Communication in Sonipat (Haryana), he his South Asia Director at The Third Pole, a multilingual platform dedicated to promoting information and discussion about the Himalayan watershed and the rivers that originate there. The region that encompasses the Himalaya-Hindu Kush mountain range and the Tibetan Plateau is widely known as the Third Pole because its ice fields contain the largest reserve of fresh water outside the polar regions. This region is the source of the 10 major river systems that provide irrigation, power and drinking water for over 1.3 billion people in Asia – nearly 20% of the world’s population.
