Sahrawi journalist and human rights activist Walid Salek El Batal was sentenced Wednesday 9th October 2019 by a Moroccan court in occupied El Aaiun to 6 years prison only for the fact that he used to be working with the group of Smara News.

The court accused El Batal of assaulting a public official, erecting road barricades and throwing stones at the police solely by basing on the fact that he had worked with the Sahrawi media group   Smara News for more than 8 years as a reporter and photographer and sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment  .

El Batal had been arrested last June in occupied Smara. A videotape shows Moroccan paramilitary group using violence, mistreatment, beating and degradation at the time of his arrest with another Sahrawi activist.
